ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is a Transient Ischemic Attack

A transient ischaemic attack (TIA), often called a 'mini-stroke', is a brief episode of stroke-like symptoms caused by a temporary disruption of blood flow to part of the brain. Symptoms typically last minutes to hours and fully resolve within 24 hours — often within an hour — without permanent brain damage. Common features include sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, particularly on one side; slurred speech or difficulty understanding speech; sudden vision changes; difficulty walking, dizziness or loss of balance; and sudden severe headache. While a TIA itself causes no lasting damage, it is a serious warning sign of significantly increased risk of future stroke, particularly within the first few days and weeks. Urgent evaluation is essential to identify and treat the underlying cause and reduce stroke risk. Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and family history. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides urgent evaluation and stroke prevention care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT

Treatment Approach

Urgent Evaluation with Aggressive Stroke Prevention

The most effective approach is urgent evaluation within hours of symptom onset to identify the cause, followed by aggressive stroke prevention with antiplatelet therapy, optimal blood pressure and cholesterol control, treatment of heart rhythm issues, smoking cessation and lifestyle modification.

    Consultation & Assessment

Dr. Pravallika reviews the episode in detail, examines the patient and arranges urgent brain imaging, heart and blood vessel imaging and blood tests.

  2. 2

    Treatment Planning

An urgent plan is created to address all identified risk factors and reduce stroke risk, in coordination with neurology and cardiology as needed.

  3. 3

    Medical Management

Antiplatelet therapy, blood pressure and cholesterol control, treatment of atrial fibrillation if present, and management of diabetes and other risk factors.

  4. 4

    Recovery & Follow-up

Long-term follow-up with regular monitoring of risk factors, medication adherence and lifestyle modification to prevent future stroke.
