A PUS-FILLED INFECTION UNDER THE SKIN
Skin Abscess
A pus-filled collection under the skin caused by bacterial infection, presenting as a painful, swollen, tender lump. Drainage with antibiotic support is the most effective treatment.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is a Skin Abscess
A skin abscess is a localised collection of pus that forms under the skin as a result of bacterial infection. It usually presents as a painful, red, swollen, tender lump that feels firm initially and then softens as pus collects. Common sites include the armpits, groin, buttocks, neck and areas of skin friction. Some abscesses also cause fever and general discomfort, particularly when they are larger or deeper. Small superficial abscesses may settle with warm compresses and antibiotic therapy, but most need incision and drainage to allow the pus to escape. Diabetics and those with low immunity are at higher risk. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides full evaluation and care, with surgical referral when needed, at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Incision and Drainage (Referral for surgical evaluation if deep or large)
Most skin abscesses are treated by draining the pus, which gives rapid relief and supports healing.
Antibiotic Therapy in Select Cases
Antibiotics are added when there is surrounding skin infection, large or multiple abscesses, fever, or in high-risk patients such as diabetics.
Wound Care
Cleaning, dressing and protecting the drained area is essential for proper healing and prevention of further infection.
Hot Compresses
Warm compresses can help small superficial abscesses come to a head and ease discomfort.
Follow-up Evaluation
Follow-up review ensures complete healing, identifies any recurrence and addresses any underlying risk factors.
