INFLAMMATION OF THE SINUSES AROUND THE NOSE
Sinusitis
An inflammation of the air-filled sinuses around the nose causing facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, discharge and headache. Most cases settle with supportive care; some need targeted antibiotic therapy.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Sinusitis
Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses — the air-filled spaces in the bones around the nose, eyes and forehead. It usually develops after a cold or due to allergies, when the lining of the sinuses becomes swollen, mucus drainage is blocked and infection sets in. Typical features include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, headache, reduced sense of smell, post-nasal drip and sometimes fever. Acute sinusitis lasts up to four weeks and is often viral, with some cases becoming bacterial. Chronic sinusitis lasts more than 12 weeks and is more often related to allergies, structural issues or persistent inflammation. Most cases improve with supportive care, saline nasal washes and decongestants, while bacterial sinusitis benefits from targeted antibiotic therapy. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides accurate diagnosis and complete sinusitis care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Saline Nasal Washes
Regular saline rinses help clear mucus, reduce congestion and support natural drainage from the sinuses.
Decongestants for Short-Term Use
Short-term decongestant therapy reduces nasal swelling and helps open the sinus drainage pathways.
Anti-Inflammatory Nasal Therapy
Anti-inflammatory nasal sprays reduce sinus and nasal inflammation, particularly helpful in chronic sinusitis and allergy-related cases.
Targeted Antibiotic Therapy if Bacterial
Antibiotic treatment is used when bacterial sinusitis is identified or strongly suspected, especially with prolonged or severe symptoms.
ENT Referral for Chronic or Recurrent Sinusitis (Referral for ENT evaluation)
Patients with chronic, recurrent or complicated sinusitis benefit from specialist ENT evaluation and structural assessment.
