DIFFICULTY BREATHING — MANY POSSIBLE CAUSES
Shortness of Breath
A sensation of difficult or uncomfortable breathing, with many possible causes including heart, lung, blood or anxiety-related conditions. Careful evaluation guides targeted treatment.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath, also called breathlessness or dyspnoea, is a sensation of difficult, uncomfortable or laboured breathing. It can range from mild breathlessness on exertion to severe difficulty breathing at rest. Causes are broad and include lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia and pulmonary embolism; heart conditions such as heart failure, coronary artery disease and arrhythmias; anaemia; obesity; anxiety and panic disorders; and acute conditions such as infections or allergic reactions. Some forms of shortness of breath are mild and chronic, while others are acute and life-threatening, needing urgent evaluation. A careful history, examination and targeted investigations — chest X-ray, ECG, blood tests, lung function tests and oxygen-level measurement — help identify the cause and guide treatment. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides systematic evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Systematic Evaluation with Targeted Therapy
The most effective approach is a systematic evaluation to identify the underlying cause — lung, heart, blood, metabolic or psychological — followed by targeted therapy. Severe or sudden breathlessness needs urgent emergency care.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika takes a detailed history, examines the chest and heart and arranges chest X-ray, ECG, blood tests and lung function tests.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created based on the identified cause and severity, with emergency care arranged for severe acute breathlessness.
- 3
Medical Management
Cause-specific therapy for asthma, COPD, heart failure, anaemia, pneumonia or other conditions, with oxygen and hospital admission for severe cases.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Regular review to monitor response, optimise therapy and address any contributing factors such as obesity, smoking or deconditioning.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Cause-Specific Therapy
Treatment is directed at the underlying cause — inhaled therapy for asthma and COPD, heart failure therapy for cardiac causes, iron and other treatment for anaemia, etc.
Oxygen Therapy When Needed
Patients with low oxygen levels are given supplemental oxygen, with closer monitoring and hospital admission when severe.
Treatment of Underlying Conditions
Optimising management of conditions such as heart failure, COPD, asthma, anaemia and obesity significantly improves breathlessness.
Pulmonary or Cardiac Rehabilitation (Referral for rehabilitation programme)
Structured exercise and education programmes are highly effective for patients with chronic breathlessness due to lung or heart disease.
Urgent Care for Severe Acute Breathlessness
Sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion or fainting needs urgent emergency evaluation and treatment.
