ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue in which the small air sacs of the lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult and reducing the amount of oxygen that reaches the blood. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses or, less commonly, fungi. Typical features include cough with sputum (which may be coloured or blood-stained), fever, chills, breathlessness, chest pain that worsens with breathing or coughing, and feeling generally unwell. Severity varies widely — from mild illness treated at home to severe disease needing hospital admission, oxygen support and intensive care. Elderly patients, young children, pregnant women, smokers, diabetics and those with chronic lung, heart or immune conditions are at higher risk. Vaccination provides effective protection against several common causes. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete pneumonia diagnosis, treatment and inpatient care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT

Treatment Approach

Timely Antibiotic Therapy with Supportive Care

The most effective approach is prompt diagnosis with chest X-ray and blood tests, timely targeted antibiotic therapy for bacterial pneumonia, supportive care with oxygen where needed, and identification of high-risk patients for hospital admission and closer monitoring.

  1. 1

    Consultation & Assessment

Dr. Pravallika reviews symptoms and risk factors, examines the chest and arranges chest X-ray, blood tests and oxygen-level measurement.

  2. 2

    Treatment Planning

A personalised plan is created based on severity, risk factors and likely cause, with decisions on home treatment or hospital admission.

  3. 3

    Medical Management

Targeted antibiotic therapy, supportive care, oxygen therapy where indicated and management of complications; hospital admission for severe cases.

  4. 4

    Recovery & Follow-up

Follow-up clinical review and chest X-ray to confirm resolution, with vaccination discussion and smoking cessation support.

Treatment Options

Targeted Antibiotic Therapy

Antibiotic treatment is chosen based on the likely cause, severity, age and any underlying conditions. Adjustments are made if culture results are available.

Supportive Care

Rest, plenty of fluids, fever control and chest physiotherapy support recovery during the illness.

Oxygen Therapy When Needed

Patients with low oxygen levels are given supplemental oxygen, with closer monitoring or hospital admission depending on severity.

Hospitalisation in Severe Cases

Severe pneumonia, low oxygen, elderly patients or those with significant comorbidities are admitted for intravenous therapy and closer care.

Pneumococcal and Influenza Vaccination for Prevention

Vaccination against pneumococcal disease and annual influenza is strongly recommended for elderly patients, those with chronic illness and other high-risk groups.
