A SORE THROAT INFECTION
Pharyngitis
An inflammation of the throat causing pain, scratchiness, difficulty swallowing and sometimes fever. Most cases are viral, but bacterial throat infections like strep need targeted antibiotic therapy.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx — the back of the throat — most commonly causing a sore throat. The vast majority of cases are caused by viral infections such as the common cold and influenza viruses, while bacterial causes (especially streptococcal infection, known as strep throat) are less frequent but important to identify because they need antibiotic treatment to prevent complications. Typical features include sore, scratchy throat, pain on swallowing, redness in the throat, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, mild fever and tiredness. Strep throat may also cause severe throat pain, very high fever, white patches on the tonsils and absence of cough. Most viral pharyngitis settles with rest and supportive care. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides accurate evaluation, targeted testing and complete treatment at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
