DAMAGE TO NERVES OUTSIDE THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD
Peripheral Neuropathy
Damage to peripheral nerves causing tingling, numbness, burning pain or weakness, most often in the hands and feet. Commonly due to diabetes, B12 deficiency or other conditions — manageable with targeted care.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to the peripheral nerves — those outside the brain and spinal cord — leading to abnormal sensations, pain, weakness or autonomic symptoms. The most common form is symmetrical, affecting the feet and then the hands in a 'stocking-and-glove' distribution. Typical features include tingling, numbness, burning pain, electric-shock-like sensations, sensitivity to touch, weakness, balance problems and, in some patients, problems with sweating, blood pressure or digestion. The most common cause worldwide is diabetes, but other causes include vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol use, certain medications, chemotherapy, autoimmune conditions, infections such as HIV and leprosy, inherited neuropathies and kidney or liver disease. Diagnosis involves clinical evaluation, blood tests for treatable causes and, in selected cases, nerve conduction studies. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause and includes symptomatic relief for pain and burning, foot care and rehabilitation. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive neuropathy evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Cause Identification with Symptomatic Relief
The most effective approach is identifying and treating the underlying cause — diabetes control, vitamin B12 supplementation, alcohol cessation, or addressing other causes — combined with specific medical therapy for neuropathic pain, foot care and rehabilitation.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika reviews symptoms, examines the patient and arranges blood tests for treatable causes and nerve conduction studies when indicated.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created based on the identified cause and severity, with referral for nerve conduction studies or specialist neurology when needed.
- 3
Medical Management
Cause-specific therapy, specific medical therapy for neuropathic pain, foot care, vitamin supplementation and treatment of underlying conditions.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Regular follow-up to monitor symptoms, adjust therapy, optimise diabetes control and address any complications such as foot ulcers.

Treatment Options
Identifying and Treating Underlying Cause
Optimising diabetes control, vitamin B12 supplementation, alcohol cessation, treatment of autoimmune conditions or other specific cause-targeted therapy.
Specific Medical Therapy for Neuropathic Pain
Specific medical therapy targeting neuropathic pain effectively relieves burning, tingling and shock-like pain in many patients.
Foot Care, Especially in Diabetics
Structured foot care including daily inspection, appropriate footwear, and prompt treatment of any cuts or infections is essential to prevent ulcers and complications.
Vitamin Supplementation if Deficient
Vitamin B12 and other vitamin supplementation when deficiencies are identified — sometimes reversing the neuropathy.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (Referral for physiotherapy)
Structured exercises and rehabilitation help maintain strength, balance and function in patients with significant neuropathy.
