A CONTAGIOUS VIRAL INFECTION OF THE SALIVARY GLANDS
Mumps
A contagious viral infection causing painful swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache and muscle ache. Vaccination provides effective prevention.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Mumps
Mumps is a contagious viral infection caused by the mumps virus, which mainly affects the salivary glands — particularly the parotid glands located in front of and below the ears. It typically causes painful swelling of these glands on one or both sides, along with fever, headache, muscle aches and tiredness. The infection spreads through respiratory droplets and direct contact, and is more common in unvaccinated children and adolescents. While most patients recover fully with supportive care, mumps can occasionally cause complications such as orchitis (testicular inflammation), meningitis, hearing loss or pancreatitis. Vaccination as part of the MMR schedule provides effective long-term prevention. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Supportive Care with MMR Vaccination for Prevention
Treatment for mumps is largely supportive — there is no specific antiviral therapy. The most effective long-term measure is the MMR vaccine, which provides strong protection against mumps, measles and rubella in children and susceptible adults.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Supportive Care
Rest, hydration, soft diet and avoiding sour foods that increase saliva production support comfort during recovery.
Pain Control and Hydration
Safe pain and fever-controlling medication along with adequate fluids ease symptoms during the illness.
Isolation
Patients are advised to stay home and avoid contact with others for several days from the onset of gland swelling to prevent spread.
Monitoring for Complications (orchitis, meningitis)
Close clinical monitoring helps identify complications such as testicular pain, severe headache or hearing changes that need additional treatment.
MMR Vaccination for Prevention
The combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is the most effective way to prevent mumps, given as part of the routine childhood schedule and to susceptible adults.
