A TICK-BORNE BACTERIAL INFECTION
Lyme Disease
A bacterial infection spread through the bite of infected ticks, causing rash, fever and joint pain. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment lead to full recovery in most patients.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The infection typically begins with a distinctive expanding rash at the site of the tick bite, often described as having a target or bull's-eye appearance, along with fever, fatigue, headache and body pain. If not recognised early, the bacteria can spread to the joints, heart or nervous system, leading to longer-term complications. Early diagnosis and a full course of antibiotic therapy usually result in complete recovery. Lyme disease is uncommon in India but may be considered in travellers returning from forested or tick-endemic areas. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides evaluation, testing and complete care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Early Antibiotic Therapy
Starting antibiotic therapy as early as possible — ideally in the first weeks of infection — is the single most effective step. Early treatment usually leads to complete recovery and prevents the infection from spreading to the joints, heart or nervous system.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika reviews the history of tick exposure, examines the rash and other symptoms, and orders appropriate blood tests.
- 2
Treatment Planning
Based on the stage of infection and any organ involvement, an antibiotic plan is created — oral or intravenous depending on severity.
- 3
Medical Management
A full course of antibiotic therapy, with symptom relief and monitoring for response and any complications.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Follow-up review to confirm full recovery, address any persistent symptoms and discuss prevention for future exposure.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Oral Antibiotic Therapy (First-line)
Standard antibiotic treatment, usually given for a defined course, is highly effective in early Lyme disease.
Alternative Oral Antibiotic Therapy
Other oral antibiotic options are used in patients who cannot take first-line therapy, such as in pregnancy or allergy.
IV Antibiotic Therapy for Severe Cases
Intravenous antibiotic therapy is used when the infection has spread to the nervous system or the heart.
Symptomatic Relief
Medication and supportive care for pain, joint discomfort, fever and fatigue during recovery.
Follow-up for Post-Treatment Symptoms
Continued review to address any lingering symptoms such as fatigue or joint pain, which can persist for a few weeks after treatment.
