LOW WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT
Leukopenia
A low white blood cell count, increasing the risk of infections. Causes include viral infections, medications, bone marrow conditions and nutritional deficiencies. Treatment depends on the cause and severity.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Leukopenia
Leukopenia refers to a low white blood cell count, which reduces the body's ability to fight infections. It can affect different white blood cell types, with neutropenia (low neutrophil count) being particularly important because neutrophils are the body's main defence against bacterial infections. Causes include viral infections (commonly), medications (particularly chemotherapy, certain antibiotics and other drugs), autoimmune conditions, nutritional deficiencies (B12, folate), bone marrow disorders including aplastic anaemia and leukaemia, certain inherited conditions, and overwhelming infections. Typical features depend on severity and include frequent or severe infections, fever, mouth ulcers, sore throat, skin infections and unusual infections. Severe neutropenia is a serious condition that requires prompt evaluation of any fever as a medical emergency. Diagnosis involves complete blood count, blood film, bone marrow examination in selected cases, and tests for the underlying cause. Treatment depends on the cause and includes addressing the underlying cause, infection prevention, prompt treatment of infections and, in selected cases, specific therapy. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Cause Identification with Infection Prevention
The most effective approach is identifying and treating the underlying cause, combined with strict infection prevention measures, vaccinations where appropriate, prompt evaluation of any fever, and specific haematology care for persistent or severe leukopenia.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika reviews medical and medication history, examines the patient and arranges blood tests including blood film review.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created based on the identified or likely cause, severity and presence of infection.
- 3
Medical Management
Cause-specific therapy, withdrawal of causative medications, infection prevention measures and prompt treatment of any infections.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Follow-up blood tests to monitor counts, with haematology referral for persistent or severe leukopenia.

Treatment Options
Identifying the Underlying Cause
Careful evaluation determines whether the cause is viral, drug-related, autoimmune, nutritional or due to bone marrow disorder.
Withdrawal of Causative Medications
Identifying and stopping medications that are causing low white blood cell counts is essential.
Treatment of Underlying Conditions
Specific treatment is provided for viral infections, autoimmune conditions, nutritional deficiencies or bone marrow disorders.
Infection Prevention and Treatment
Strict infection prevention measures, vaccinations where appropriate, and prompt antibiotic treatment of any suspected infection in severe neutropenia.
Specific Therapy in Selected Cases (Referral for haematology)
Specific growth factor therapy or other treatments may be used in selected patients with severe or persistent neutropenia under specialist care.
