LOW BODY IODINE AFFECTING THYROID FUNCTION
Iodine Deficiency
Low body iodine levels that affect thyroid hormone production, causing goitre, fatigue, weight gain, tiredness and developmental issues in children. Easily prevented through iodised salt and dietary care.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Iodine Deficiency
Iodine is an essential nutrient required by the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth and brain development. When the body lacks enough iodine — usually due to inadequate dietary intake, particularly in regions with iodine-poor soil — the thyroid gland enlarges to try to capture more iodine, leading to a visible swelling in the neck called a goitre. Persistent iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism with tiredness, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin and slow heart rate. In pregnancy, severe iodine deficiency can affect the baby's brain development. Iodine deficiency is highly preventable through universal use of iodised salt and adequate dietary intake. Treatment involves iodine supplementation, management of any resulting thyroid disorder and dietary counselling. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete iodine deficiency assessment and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
