LOW BLOOD CALCIUM LEVEL
Hypocalcemia
A condition with low calcium levels in the blood, with diverse causes and a wide range of symptoms including muscle cramps, tingling and, in severe cases, seizures. Manageable with cause-specific treatment.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Hypocalcemia
Hypocalcemia refers to a lower than normal level of calcium in the blood. Calcium is essential for normal nerve and muscle function (including the heart), bone health, blood clotting and many cellular processes. Common causes include vitamin D deficiency, parathyroid gland disorders (hypoparathyroidism, often after thyroid or parathyroid surgery), chronic kidney disease, severe magnesium deficiency, certain medications, pancreatitis, severe sepsis and massive blood transfusion. Typical features depend on severity and rate of onset and include tingling and numbness around the mouth, fingers and toes, muscle cramps and spasms (particularly in the hands — known as carpal spasm), muscle twitching, tiredness, anxiety, and in severe cases, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms and altered mental state. Mild chronic hypocalcemia may cause no symptoms. Diagnosis is confirmed with blood tests for calcium (corrected for albumin or ionised calcium), along with tests for vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, magnesium and other causes. Treatment involves calcium supplementation (oral or intravenous depending on severity), vitamin D supplementation, treatment of the underlying cause and correction of magnesium deficiency if present. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Calcium & Vitamin D Correction with Cause-Specific Care
The most effective approach is correcting calcium with appropriate supplementation (oral or intravenous depending on severity), addressing vitamin D and magnesium status, treating the underlying cause, and providing long-term management for chronic causes such as hypoparathyroidism.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika reviews symptoms and possible causes, examines the patient and arranges blood tests including calcium, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, magnesium and kidney function.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created based on severity, cause and chronicity.
- 3
Medical Management
Calcium and vitamin D supplementation, treatment of underlying cause, correction of magnesium deficiency and hospital care for acute symptomatic cases.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Regular monitoring of calcium and related parameters, with adjustment of therapy as needed.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Calcium Supplementation
Calcium supplementation is given orally for mild to moderate hypocalcemia and intravenously for severe symptomatic cases.
Vitamin D Supplementation
Vitamin D supplementation is essential, as many cases of hypocalcemia are linked to vitamin D deficiency.
Treatment of Underlying Cause
Specific treatment is provided for hypoparathyroidism, chronic kidney disease, pancreatitis or other identified causes.
Correction of Magnesium Deficiency
Magnesium deficiency often co-exists with and contributes to hypocalcemia, and must be corrected for calcium correction to be effective.
Hospital Care for Severe or Symptomatic Cases
Severe symptomatic hypocalcemia is treated in hospital with intravenous calcium and close monitoring.
