ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What are High Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat that the body uses for energy. When blood triglyceride levels are persistently raised (hypertriglyceridaemia), the risk of heart disease, stroke and inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis) goes up significantly. Common contributors include excess calorie intake, alcohol, refined carbohydrate-rich diets, diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, kidney problems and certain medications. Some patients have inherited forms with much higher triglyceride levels. Most patients have no symptoms and are detected through a routine fasting lipid profile. Management focuses on lifestyle modification — particularly weight loss, dietary change and reduction of refined carbohydrates and alcohol — alongside treatment of underlying conditions and lipid-lowering medical therapy in selected cases. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete evaluation and care of high triglycerides at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
