A VIRAL LIVER INFECTION FROM CONTAMINATED WATER
Hepatitis E
A viral liver infection spread through contaminated water and undercooked meat, causing tiredness, jaundice and abdominal discomfort. Usually self-limiting, but can be serious in pregnancy.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Hepatitis E
Hepatitis E is a viral infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis E virus, spread mainly through contaminated drinking water and, in some regions, undercooked meat. It is particularly common in parts of South and Southeast Asia, with seasonal outbreaks during monsoon and floods. The illness typically presents with tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, jaundice, dark urine and pale stools, similar to hepatitis A. Most patients recover fully within a few weeks without specific antiviral treatment, and the infection does not generally become chronic in healthy individuals. However, hepatitis E can cause severe disease and even liver failure during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, with significant risk to both mother and baby. Diagnosis is confirmed with specific blood tests. Treatment is supportive, focused on rest, hydration and nutrition. Pregnant women with hepatitis E need particularly close monitoring and care. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides accurate diagnosis and complete care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
