A LIFE-THREATENING HEAT EMERGENCY
Heat Stroke
A medical emergency in which body temperature rises to dangerous levels due to excessive heat exposure, with risk of organ damage, brain injury and death. Needs urgent cooling and hospital care.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Heat Stroke
Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency in which body temperature rises to 40°C (104°F) or above due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, often combined with high humidity, dehydration and physical exertion. It is the most severe form of heat-related illness and can rapidly cause damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, muscles and other organs, and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Heat stroke can be classical (occurring in vulnerable individuals during heat waves — older adults, infants, those with chronic illnesses, certain medications) or exertional (occurring in healthy young people during strenuous activity in hot conditions). Typical features include very high body temperature, altered mental state ranging from confusion to seizures and coma, hot dry skin (in classical heat stroke) or profuse sweating (in exertional heat stroke), rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, rapid breathing, headache, nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis is clinical and confirmed by core body temperature. Treatment is urgent and includes rapid cooling using various methods, fluid replacement, treatment of complications and hospital admission. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides urgent evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Urgent Rapid Cooling with Hospital Care
The most effective approach is immediate rapid cooling using methods such as cold water immersion, evaporative cooling or ice packs to specific body areas, combined with intravenous fluid replacement, treatment of complications and intensive monitoring in hospital — every minute counts.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Urgent evaluation with measurement of core body temperature, vital signs and assessment of mental state and organ function.
- 2
Treatment Planning
Immediate rapid cooling is started while assessment and further investigations are arranged, with hospital admission for monitoring.
- 3
Medical Management
Rapid cooling, intravenous fluid replacement, treatment of complications affecting brain, heart, kidneys and muscles, and intensive monitoring.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Ongoing assessment of organ function, recovery from complications, and patient education on prevention of recurrence.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Immediate Rapid Cooling
Rapid cooling using methods such as cold water immersion, evaporative cooling with water and fans, or ice packs to neck, armpits and groin is the most critical immediate intervention.
Intravenous Fluid Replacement
Intravenous fluids correct dehydration, support circulation and help cool the body, with the amount and type guided by clinical condition.
Treatment of Complications
Specific treatment is provided for complications affecting the brain (seizures, altered consciousness), heart, kidneys, muscles (rhabdomyolysis) and blood clotting.
Hospital Admission and Monitoring
Patients with heat stroke require hospital admission, often to intensive care, for monitoring and management of complications.
Prevention Counselling
Patients and families are educated about heat illness prevention, particularly important during heat waves and for vulnerable individuals.
