ENLARGEMENT OF THE THYROID GLAND
Goiter
An enlarged thyroid gland seen as a swelling in the neck, due to iodine deficiency, inflammation, autoimmune disease or nodules. Treated based on cause, size and function.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is a Goiter
Goitre is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, seen as a swelling at the front of the neck. It can occur with normal thyroid function, an underactive thyroid or an overactive thyroid, depending on the underlying cause. Common causes include iodine deficiency, autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's or Graves'), thyroid nodules, thyroiditis and certain medications. Some goitres are smooth and uniform, while others have one or more nodules. Symptoms may be cosmetic only, or include discomfort, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, breathing trouble (in large goitres) and features of thyroid hormone imbalance. Evaluation includes thyroid function tests, antibodies, ultrasound and sometimes fine-needle aspiration of nodules. Treatment depends on the cause, size and function, ranging from observation and hormone replacement to surgical referral. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete goitre evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

CLINICAL DETAILS
KeyFacts
Thyroid function tests, antibodies, ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration of nodules where indicated
Goitre may be associated with normal, low or high thyroid function
Tailored to cause — observation, medical therapy or surgical referral
Suspicious nodules need fine-needle aspiration to rule out cancer
Large goitres causing pressure on airway or swallowing may need surgery

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Tailored Treatment Based on Cause & Function
The most effective approach to goitre is a tailored plan that considers the underlying cause, thyroid function, size of the gland and any compressive or cosmetic concerns — combining observation, medical therapy, surgical referral and fine-needle aspiration where appropriate.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika examines the neck, reviews symptoms and orders thyroid function tests, ultrasound and any other relevant tests.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created based on the cause, function, size and any concerning features identified on imaging.
- 3
Medical Management
Thyroid hormone replacement, antithyroid therapy or close observation as appropriate, with surgical referral if indicated.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Long-term monitoring with periodic clinical examination, blood tests and ultrasound to track progress and detect any changes early.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Treating the Underlying Cause
Care begins with identifying and addressing the cause — iodine deficiency, autoimmune disease, nodules or thyroiditis.
Thyroid Hormone Replacement if Hypothyroid
Daily thyroid hormone replacement is given when the goitre is associated with an underactive thyroid.
Surgery if Compressive (Referral for surgical evaluation)
Surgical referral is recommended for very large goitres causing pressure symptoms or significant cosmetic concerns.
Ultrasound Monitoring
Regular ultrasound helps track the size and structure of the gland and any nodules over time.
Fine-Needle Aspiration if Nodular (Referral for radiology / pathology procedure)
Suspicious or larger nodules are sampled through fine-needle aspiration to rule out cancer and guide further treatment.
