INFLAMMATION OF THE STOMACH LINING
Gastritis
An inflammation of the stomach lining causing upper abdominal pain, nausea, bloating and indigestion. Can be acute or chronic, and treated based on the underlying cause.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Gastritis
Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining, which can be acute (developing suddenly) or chronic (developing gradually and persisting). Common causes include H. pylori infection, prolonged use of anti-inflammatory pain medications, excessive alcohol intake, severe physical stress, bile reflux, autoimmune conditions and certain viral or bacterial infections. Typical features include burning or gnawing upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, indigestion, loss of appetite and a feeling of fullness after small meals. Chronic gastritis can sometimes progress to peptic ulcers and, in rare cases, increase the long-term risk of stomach cancer. Diagnosis is based on clinical features and confirmed with endoscopy and H. pylori testing in selected cases. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause, acid-suppression therapy and lifestyle changes. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive gastritis care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Treatment Options
Acid-Suppression Therapy
Effective medication reduces stomach acid, eases symptoms and supports healing of the inflamed stomach lining.
H. pylori Eradication When Present
Structured combination eradication therapy clears H. pylori and significantly reduces the risk of progression to ulcers.
Withdrawal of Triggering Medications Where Possible
Stopping or switching anti-inflammatory pain medications, where clinically possible, removes a major cause of gastritis.
Lifestyle and Dietary Modification
Reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking, eating smaller regular meals and avoiding irritating foods support recovery.
Endoscopic Evaluation in Selected Cases (Referral for gastroenterology)
Endoscopy is recommended for patients with persistent symptoms, alarm features or to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.
