A TREATABLE B-VITAMIN DEFICIENCY
Folate Deficiency
A deficiency of folate, important for blood cell production and DNA synthesis, leading to anaemia and other features. Effectively treated with supplementation and dietary improvement.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Folate Deficiency
Folate (vitamin B9) is essential for healthy red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, cell division and, importantly, for the prevention of neural tube defects in developing babies. Dietary sources include green leafy vegetables, pulses, citrus fruits, fortified grains and some other foods. Folate deficiency results from inadequate dietary intake, increased requirements (particularly pregnancy and growth), reduced absorption (in coeliac disease and other gut conditions), increased loss (chronic haemolysis), excessive alcohol intake, and certain medications. Typical features include tiredness, weakness, pale skin, mild jaundice, sore tongue, mouth ulcers, breathlessness, palpitations and mood changes. Importantly, folate deficiency during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida in the baby — for this reason, folate supplementation is routinely recommended before and during pregnancy. Diagnosis is confirmed with blood tests for folate level. Treatment involves folate supplementation, dietary modification and addressing the underlying cause. It is important to also assess vitamin B12 status, as both deficiencies can occur together. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive folate deficiency evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Treatment Approach
Folate Supplementation with B12 Assessment
The most effective approach is folate supplementation at appropriate doses, combined with assessment of vitamin B12 status (both deficiencies often co-exist), dietary improvement and addressing the underlying cause — with longer-term supplementation for ongoing risk factors and pregnancy.
- 1
Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Pravallika reviews diet, symptoms and risk factors, examines the patient and arranges blood tests including folate, vitamin B12 and complete blood count.
- 2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is created with folate supplementation and dietary advice.
- 3
Medical Management
Folate supplementation, treatment of any vitamin B12 deficiency, dietary advice and management of underlying conditions.
- 4
Recovery & Follow-up
Follow-up blood tests to confirm normalisation, with ongoing supplementation in pregnancy or other risk factors.
AVAILABLE TREATMENTS
Treatment Options
Folate Supplementation
Folate supplementation is given orally at appropriate doses to correct the deficiency, with treatment typically continued for several months.
Combined Assessment and Treatment of B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 status is always assessed in folate deficiency, and any combined deficiency is treated together — never folate alone in untreated B12 deficiency.
Dietary Advice
Guidance on folate-rich foods including green leafy vegetables, pulses, citrus fruits, fortified grains and other foods.
Pregnancy Supplementation
Folate supplementation is strongly recommended before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
Treatment of Underlying Causes
Identifying and treating underlying causes such as alcohol use disorder, coeliac disease or medication effects.
