ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Fatigue and Weakness
Fatigue is a feeling of persistent tiredness, exhaustion or lack of energy that is not relieved by rest, while weakness refers to reduced muscle strength. Both are very common complaints with a wide range of possible causes. Common medical causes include anaemia, vitamin and mineral deficiencies (particularly iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D), thyroid disorders, diabetes, kidney and liver disease, heart and lung conditions, infections (including viral illness and tuberculosis), inflammatory conditions, sleep disorders (particularly sleep apnea), and certain medications. Mental health causes including depression, anxiety and chronic stress are also very common contributors. Lifestyle factors such as poor sleep, sedentary lifestyle, dehydration, inadequate diet and excessive caffeine or alcohol play important roles. In some patients, fatigue persists despite thorough evaluation — termed chronic fatigue syndrome or similar conditions. Diagnosis involves detailed history, examination and targeted blood tests, with further investigation guided by initial findings. Treatment is cause-specific. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive fatigue evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
