ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in, leading to inadequate water in the body to perform normal functions. It can result from inadequate fluid intake, excessive fluid loss (sweating in hot weather or during exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, increased urination from uncontrolled diabetes or diuretic use), or both. Older adults, infants, young children, those with chronic illness and people exposed to hot weather or intense physical activity are at particular risk. Typical features include thirst, dry mouth and skin, reduced urine output, dark concentrated urine, tiredness, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps and reduced skin elasticity. Severe dehydration can cause confusion, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, fainting, kidney injury and, in extreme cases, shock and life-threatening complications. Diagnosis is based on clinical features, with blood and urine tests in moderate to severe cases. Treatment involves fluid replacement — oral rehydration in mild cases and intravenous fluids in moderate to severe cases — along with treatment of any underlying cause. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT

Treatment Approach

Fluid Replacement with Cause Treatment

The most effective approach is prompt fluid replacement — oral rehydration solution in mild cases, intravenous fluids in moderate to severe cases — combined with treatment of the underlying cause and preventive measures to avoid recurrence.

  1. 1

    Consultation & Assessment

Dr. Pravallika reviews fluid intake, losses and symptoms, examines the patient, assesses hydration status and arranges blood and urine tests when needed.

  2. 2

    Treatment Planning

A personalised plan is created based on severity, fluid status and underlying cause.

  3. 3

    Medical Management

Oral or intravenous fluid replacement, electrolyte correction when needed, treatment of underlying causes and supportive care.

  4. 4

    Recovery & Follow-up

Follow-up to confirm recovery and counselling on prevention of recurrence.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS

Treatment Options

Oral Rehydration in Mild Cases

Mild dehydration is treated with oral fluids including oral rehydration solution, which is particularly effective and contains balanced electrolytes.

Intravenous Fluid Replacement in Moderate to Severe Cases

Moderate to severe dehydration is treated with intravenous fluids tailored to the patient's needs and any electrolyte imbalances.

Treatment of Underlying Cause

Specific treatment of vomiting, diarrhoea, infections, uncontrolled diabetes or medication side effects supports recovery and prevents recurrence.

Electrolyte Correction When Needed

Electrolyte imbalances that often accompany dehydration are corrected alongside fluid replacement.

Prevention Counselling

Patients are counselled on adequate fluid intake — particularly in hot weather, during exercise, in illness and in older age — to prevent recurrence.
