ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition in which the airways become permanently narrowed and damaged, making breathing progressively more difficult. It usually includes chronic bronchitis (inflammation and excess mucus production in the airways) and emphysema (damage to the small air sacs of the lungs). The most common causes are long-term tobacco smoking and prolonged exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution, including biomass smoke from cooking fuels. Typical features include persistent cough, sputum production, breathlessness — particularly on exertion — wheezing, frequent chest infections and reduced exercise tolerance. COPD is not curable, but treatment can slow progression, relieve symptoms and reduce flare-ups. Stopping smoking is the single most important step. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete COPD diagnosis, inhaler-based therapy and long-term care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

HOW WE TREAT IT

Treatment Approach

Smoking Cessation with Inhaled Therapy

The single most effective step is stopping smoking, combined with appropriate inhaled bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory therapy, vaccinations, pulmonary rehabilitation and structured management of flare-ups. Together, these slow progression and dramatically improve quality of life.

  1. 1

    Consultation & Assessment

Dr. Pravallika reviews symptoms, smoking history and exposure, examines the chest and arranges spirometry, chest X-ray and other tests.

  2. 2

    Treatment Planning

A personalised plan is created with appropriate inhalers, smoking cessation support, vaccinations and rehabilitation guidance.

  3. 3

    Medical Management

Regular inhaled therapy, smoking cessation, treatment of flare-ups, vaccinations and oxygen therapy where indicated.

  4. 4

    Recovery & Follow-up

Regular review of symptoms, lung function and inhaler technique, with adjustments to therapy and referral for specialist care when needed.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS

Treatment Options

Inhaled Bronchodilator Therapy

Long-acting bronchodilator inhalers open up the airways and relieve breathlessness, used regularly as the foundation of COPD treatment.

Inhaled Anti-Inflammatory Therapy in Select Cases

Inhaled anti-inflammatory therapy is added in selected patients, particularly those with frequent flare-ups.

Smoking Cessation Support

Structured counselling and support to stop smoking is the single most important step in slowing COPD progression.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (Referral for rehabilitation programme)

Structured exercise, education and breathing-training programmes improve exercise tolerance and quality of life.

Vaccinations and Oxygen Therapy When Needed

Annual flu and pneumococcal vaccinations reduce the risk of serious chest infections; long-term oxygen therapy is provided in selected patients with low oxygen levels.
