A MOSQUITO-BORNE VIRAL INFECTION WITH SEVERE JOINT PAIN
Chikungunya
A mosquito-borne viral infection causing sudden fever, severe joint pain, rash and weakness. Most patients recover, but joint pain may persist for weeks and need supportive care.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Chikungunya
Chikungunya is a viral infection spread to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes — the same mosquitoes that spread dengue. The illness typically begins with sudden high fever, followed by severe joint pain, body aches, headache, rash and tiredness. The hallmark feature is intense, often debilitating joint pain that can persist for weeks or even months after the fever has settled. Most patients recover fully, but the prolonged joint symptoms can interfere with daily life. There is no specific antiviral treatment, and care is focused on symptom relief, hydration and physiotherapy for chronic joint pain. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides complete chikungunya care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
