A COMMON BACTERIAL SKIN INFECTION
Cellulitis
A bacterial infection of the skin and underlying tissue causing redness, warmth, swelling and pain, sometimes with fever. Prompt antibiotic therapy prevents spread and complications.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Cellulitis
Cellulitis is a common bacterial infection of the skin and the soft tissue just below it. It usually begins when bacteria enter the skin through a cut, crack, insect bite, wound or fungal infection, and then spread to the surrounding tissue. The affected area becomes red, warm, swollen, tender and painful, often with a sharply defined border. Some patients also have fever, chills and feeling unwell. Cellulitis most commonly affects the legs and arms but can occur anywhere on the body. Without timely antibiotic treatment, the infection can spread, form an abscess, or in some patients lead to more serious illness. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides accurate diagnosis and complete treatment at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Treatment Options
Oral or IV Antibiotic Therapy
Antibiotic treatment is chosen based on the severity, with intravenous therapy for severe or spreading infection.
Limb Elevation

Wound Care
Cleaning, dressing and protecting any breaks in the skin help control the source of infection.
Monitoring for Spread or Abscess Formation
Close observation to detect any spread, deeper involvement or formation of an abscess, which may need additional treatment.
Treating Underlying Skin Condition
Addressing factors such as fungal infection, eczema or lymphoedema reduces the risk of recurrence.
