A VERY COMMON MUSCULOSKELETAL COMPLAINT
Back Pain
Pain in the back, ranging from short-term mechanical causes to chronic conditions with significant impact on daily life. Most cases are manageable with lifestyle measures and structured care.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints, affecting most people at some point in life. It can be classified by location (low back, upper back, neck), duration (acute under 4 weeks, subacute 4 to 12 weeks, chronic over 12 weeks) and cause. Most back pain is mechanical — related to muscles, ligaments, joints, discs and bones of the spine — and resolves within a few weeks with simple measures. Less commonly, back pain is due to specific conditions including disc problems, spinal stenosis, fractures, infections, inflammatory arthritis or, rarely, tumours and other serious conditions. Typical features include localised pain, stiffness, muscle spasm, reduced range of motion, and sometimes radiation of pain to the legs (sciatica) or arms. Red-flag features such as new severe pain, neurological symptoms, weight loss, fever or pain at night indicate the need for urgent evaluation. Treatment includes pain relief, structured exercise, physiotherapy, lifestyle modification and treatment of specific causes when identified. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides comprehensive back pain evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
