ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is Actinomycosis

Actinomycosis is a rare, slowly progressive bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species, which are normally present in the mouth, intestines and genital tract. The bacteria can invade tissues after dental procedures, injury, surgery or other disruptions to the normal barrier. It typically forms hard, slowly enlarging swellings or abscesses, most commonly in the face and neck, but also in the chest, abdomen or pelvic region. The infection may discharge through skin openings (sinuses) and can be mistaken for cancer due to its slow growth. With a long course of antibiotic therapy, often combined with surgical drainage of abscesses, actinomycosis is curable. Dr. Patnam Pravallika Reddy provides full evaluation and care at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

    Treatment Planning

A long-term antibiotic plan is created, with referral for surgical evaluation if abscesses need drainage or tissue removal.

  3. 3

    Medical Management

Sustained antibiotic therapy, wound care and treatment of any complications, along with regular monitoring.

  4. 4

    Recovery & Follow-up
